Fourth wave of innovation. Crowd innovation

Knowledge CMS Innovation Have you submitted your ideas On March 21, 2011, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) launched an exciting new web tool. The project, titled the Innovation Center, allows users to actively participate in, and help shape the future of Medicare, Medicaid and CHIP programs. By enthusiastically seeking innovative ideas from the public, CMS is looking to grow the Innovation Center by identifying how healthcare can be paid for and delivered in ways that will both save money and improve health. The Innovation Center, established by the Affordable Care Act, was given the flexibility to rapidly test innovative care and payment models and the resources to scale up those successful ones. “This is a new and powerful force for improving healthcare for Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. We believe there are models throughout the country that can achieve better outcomes and improve the quality of care. The job of the Innovation Center is to identify, validate and scale these models to provide all beneficiaries with a seamless care experience, better health and lower costs. Working together, we can create a system that works better for everyone,” said Dr. Richard Gilfillan, Acting Director of the CMS Innovation Center. By collecting ideas from both the public and the private sector, the Innovation Center is looking to develop relationships across the country with those interested in transforming the healthcare delivery system while improving healthcare costs for Medicare, Medicaid and CHIP beneficiaries. As such, collecting input from partners like you is a critical step in the Innovation Center’s efforts. The Innovation Center has developed a team of talented people with a broad set of skills and healthcare experience including clinical expertise, private and public sector backgrounds, knowledge in advocacy and patient organizations, the provider community, health plans and a whole host of other qualifications. Heading up the Innovation Center program is Acting Director Richard J. Gilfillan, M.D. In this role Dr. Gilfillan works with CMS leadership to develop and implement the innovative program ideas derived both internally and from you, in an effort to improve the nation’s healthcare delivery systems. Before he joined CMS, Dr. Gilfillan served as President and CEO of Geisinger Health Plan and Executive Vice President for System Insurance Operations at the Geisinger Health System, where he helped design bundled payment episode of care reimbursement systems that reward surgical and medical care providers for high-quality outcomes. In addition, Dr. Gilfillan has held several leadership positions in healthcare management, including Senior Vice President for Network Management at Coventry Health Care, where he was responsible for managing a network of 5,000 hospitals and over 500,000 physicians. Dr. Gilfillan began his career as a family practitioner and received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Georgetown University, and he earned an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. This new website www.innovations.cms.gov is an important avenue to collect your input. CMS hopes that you take the time to visit the website and share your ideas and experiences.
