| Note: The livestock liable to Zakat are those let to pasture freely, not the ones bred for trade. The Majority of Scholars including the Shafi'i, the Hanafi, and the Hanbali scholars stipulated that the pasturing livestock are liable to Zakat, unlike the livestock bred for trade, which are not liable to Zakat. A Hadith recorded by Al-Hakim reads that Amr Ibn Hazm narrated that the Prophet (pbuh) said, "For every five pasturing camels, one goat should be given as Zakat." Abu Dawood reported that Ali Ibn Abi Talib narrated that the Prophet (pbuh) said, ( "Cows bred for trade are not liable to Zakat." ). The Maliki scholars hold a different opinion as they regard both the freely pasturing livestock and the livestock bred for trade liable to Zakat. |
