i want to cancel my mobile contract phone..... - The Student Room: i want to cancel my mobile contract phone

It's been a long time since I've seen a thread so full of incorrect information and terrible advice.

If you have entered into a contract with a minimum term (sounds like you are on an 18 month contract at £35 a month or something like that), then the cancellation fee will be equal to monthly line rental x no of months remaining, reduced by a few %. So probably another £300-350.

There won't be a cancellation fee on top of that, and having a phone supplied as part of the contract really doesn't have anything to do with it (they're not going to take the handset back, they depreciate in value so fast it's really not worth their hassle).

Attempting to get out of paying the debt by claiming that you've moved abroad is not going to work; I doubt they would suspend your line rental for 6 months and even if they did that wouldn't get around the fact that you still owe them the money. If you avoid paying it, you will ruin your credit history and find it extremely hard to obtain credit in the future (credit cards, loans, mortgages) - for at least six years.

They will hand the debt to a collection agency, who will pursue you through court; you could end up with a CCJ and bailiffs turning up at your door.
